HEDDA GABLER is a compelling human drama, both savagely bleak and surprisingly comic. Henrik Ibsen created in the title character an extraordinary woman, utterly unable to compromise. Set over the two days following Hedda and Jurgen Tesman’s return from their honeymoon, we uncover the shaky foundations of their marriage, and how unrealistic expectations can lead to tragedy. Since it was first written in 1890, HEDDA GABLER has become one of Ibsen’s most popular works, despite scandalising its first reviewers (“the play leaves us with a feeling of emptiness and betrayal”, wrote one) as its themes of thwarted ambition and the power struggle between men and women still resonate today. Director Will Bird has previously directed Ibsen’s THE MASTER BUILDER at the Norwich Arts Centre, as well as, more recently, RICHARD III for Next Best Thing Productions and THE DOG IN THE MANGER for Midland Players. 24th-27th September 2008, 7.30pm |
