In complete contrast to our first production, the huge white contemporary space of the UEA Studio was swapped for the damp and dark Gothic setting of the converted church which houses the Norwich Arts Centre. This suited the period setting we adopted for Ibsen's nightmarish tale of a man driven mad by his sense of guilt. Remaining faithful to the writer's nihilistic vision with haunting lighting, antique period costumes and the music of Grieg bringing a Scandinavian masterpiece to life for a whole new generation. It was a bold move and a great learning experience for everyone involved. Charles Marenghi brought his usual gravitas to the part of Solness, with Simone O'Neill superb as his broken, vulnerable wife, Aline. |
